Assessment and Deployment

Assessments for land SAR are conducted in accordance with the requirements of Victoria Police, under the New Zealand Land Search and Rescue Dog Operational Standards. Teams are required to successfully complete four scenario-based assessments to be deemed operational. These include a corridor/path search over 1km, a night search, a blank search (with no subjects) and an open area multi-subject search (up to 25 hectares in approximately 1 hour).

Prior to being eligible to sit operational assessments, ASAR-K9 require canine handlers to undertake and demonstrate a high level of fitness as well as having to demonstrate proficiency in first aid, map reading and navigation, media awareness and search operations. Handlers and canines must also complete assessments for obedience, directional control, agility, alert indication and sociability.

Teams must be signed off as competent by approved assessors under the New Zealand Land Search and Rescue Dog Operational Standards before deployment. Deployment is initiated only on request of Victoria Police.
