Volunteers over the age of 16 years are welcome with parental involvement in training activities. To become a canine handler member you will need to be committed to search work, and prepared and able to go on deployment as required with the SAR taskforce locally, nationally and even internationally.

You’ll also need to be:

  • Fit and healthy
  • Physically and mentally agile and resilient, to be able to cope with the rigours of training, assessments and deployment
  • Able to crawl into tunnels and holes and be prepared to hide for long periods of time to assist with training
  • Able to work with other dogs
  • Prepared to travel interstate for workshops, training and assessments
  • Able to work as part of a team – in training, working bees, lifting, carrying etc
  • Willing to complete courses as required

To become an operational team requires a considerable commitment in time and effort from handlers, and is one of our most challenging roles. We conduct screening exercises for handlers and dogs prior to acceptance into the probationary member program.

We also welcome assistants without dogs who are willing to play the part of missing people in training. This is a crucial part of our training program.
